What is Menopause?

It is a natural phase in the life of a woman when her menstrual cycle stops permanently. It means that this is the end of her ability to have children. Menopause mostly occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 years, though the age can vary in certain situations. With menopause, a woman experiences certain changes in her body both physically and emotionally, which require care. Some of the symptoms that a woman experiences physically are night sweats, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, changes in sleep patterns, etc while the emotional ones are mood swings, anxiety, feelings of sadness, and more. Therefore, to lead a happy and healthy life, it is important to manage these symptoms by following a proper diet, staying active, and managing stress in the right manner.

Symptoms and Signs

During menopause, there is a decline in estrogen levels, and because of this, there are hormonal changes that lead to various symptoms that help you detect this issue. Though, the signs and symptoms vary in intensity from woman to woman, proper care is essential during this phase.

Night Sweats

This is a condition when excessive sweating occurs at night during sleep. It specifically happens at night and is somewhat similar to hot flashes. It disrupts the sleeping pattern and causes fatigue during the day.

Hot Flashes

It is one of the most common symptoms of menopause. It is like a sudden feeling of heat that is accompanied by sweating and flushing of the neck, chest, and face. It occurs at any part of the day, whether day or night, and lasts for a few seconds or minutes.

Vaginal Dryness

When there is a decline in estrogen levels, there are certain changes in the vaginal tissues, leading to decreased moisture and lubrication. It causes itching, pain, and discomfort during sexual intercourse and leads to reduced sexual satisfaction.

Mood Swings

There are fluctuations in the hormonal levels during menopause, and this leads to mood swings, anxiety, depression, irritability, feelings of sadness, and more. This directly impacts relationships and emotional well-being.

Sleep Disturbances

Women experience sleep disruptions during menopause. It can be difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early. This is all because of hot flashes and night sweats, which further lead to fatigue and drowsiness during the day.

Weight Gain

During menopause, there are changes in hormones and metabolism that lead to weight gain in women, especially around the abdomen area. Women have difficulty losing weight, even if they follow a healthy diet and exercise routine.

How to Manage the Symptoms of Menopause?

  • Follow A Healthy Lifestyle: During menopause, it is extremely important to take care of your diet and follow a healthy lifestyle. Eat a balanced diet full of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and vitamins. Make sure that you drink a lot of water throughout the day and stay hydrated.
  • Stay Cool: Stay in spaces that are air-conditioned or cool so that, in case you feel a hot flash coming, you can maintain your composure. It is also advised to avoid foods that trigger this situation, like spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine, hot beverages, and more.
  • Relaxation Techniques: It is important to reduce and manage stress during this time, and that is why it is recommended to go for deep breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, etc. You should also take regular breaks in between work and not over exhaust yourself.

Thus, menopause is a cycle of physical and emotional changes that need support and guidance. The needs of each and every individual are different, and that is why learning some basic coping strategies can help.
